Hotwater Beach ~ 12 Feb

Driving from Papamoa Beach to Hotwater beach,only165 km , lasted a good 3,5 hrs. The reason why it took so long was because of several road works and the mountains. The sun disappeared soon behind the clouds and air was humid. At 1200 hrs we arrived at the camping place in at Hotwater Beach. It was raining heavily at the time that the electrical cable has to be connected. You will not believe it but a miracle happened ,as soon as I connected the plug the rain stopped and the sun started to shine immediately. There must be a connection to heaven as well.Do not know who is responsible for this but anyhow thanks and good job.

Hotwater beach is famous for its natural hot springs bubbling beneath the sand. The village is laying 6 km south of Hahei and visitors can dig their own thermal spa in the sand between low and mid tides. Spades can be rent and we saw a lot of " diggers " carrying their tools. It reminds me of our German tourists which are doing the same and digging holes in our beaches at the Gold Coast of Dishoek Bay. I never did this but wonder if  we have our own hot therapeutic waters , who knows. It certainly will cut the price of the Delta energy bill if this would be the case and can start my own business renting spades. Besides my office Janet can cook " Brattwurst " on the Barbie and we both will earn our money for our next holiday.

Ok, I am carried away bit, back to Hotwater Beach. There are actually two spots the Maori and the Orua . Approximately 2 km under the sand lies a heated rock formed out of magma and still reach a temperature of 170C .This rock is volcanic intrusion created a 9 million years ago, plus or minus a couple of years ,but who cares. Groundwater seeps to the rock and returns as hot water with a temperature of 60c at the surface. The bubbling is not caused by the boiling water but by the release of the carbon dioxide gas. The water is " neutral " ,not acid or alkaline , and contains a lot of goodies like dissolved salt, calcium, potassium ,magnesium ,fluorine ,silica and bromine. My skin feels already soft ,like a baby's bum ,so decided to skip this special " treatment " and was glad Janet agreed otherwise I still have to dig a hole for her with these hot temperatures. I was amazed how many tourists were sitting in the dirty sandy pools all on top of each other. The high waves and surfers are much more spectacular to see.

Since Pascal Jacobs of Bloff announced on Facebook that he is also touring NZ with a Campervan , Janet is looking out for his Campervan rented from United. This afternoon she saw this type of car and was getting excited, however the man had a lot of hair and a beard.Very disappointed but tonight the "fish and chips will definitely cheer her up.
