This will be the last article of the trip through NZ by camper.Tomorrow we will join the ms Oosterdam and will sail with her for 28 days to NZ, Australia, Fiji islands ,New Caledonia and Vanuatu .
The map attached , was the route we followed. There is a part missing because did not pick up the Gps signal. Hope you have enjoyed it and below some details and tips for those who are planning having a holiday in this wonderful country as well. We certainly liked it very much.
From 17 Januari till 16 Februari we : 1) drove 2900 km, mostly in the morning. 2) consumed approx 400 liter of Diesel 3) paid $595 on fuel, with and without discount. ( highest discount 30cents/ liter.) 4) visited 20 "top 10 holiday "different campings.Average price $ 43/ night 5) visited the North as well as the South part of NZ. 6) drove through the mountains and the coastline in the east and west 6) had just a few days of rain and mostly sunny and warm days. 7) had an average day temperature of 22C. 8) sailed from Wellington to Picton and back Impressed by : 1) the beautiful scenery and/or landscape. 2) cleanliness of the campings. 3) the clear and different road signs. 4) the number of road works/ repairs 5) in general the friendly people.
Tips: 1) max speed is 100 km , notice that there is a lot of speed control by the police. 2) if you rent a heavy Campervan max speed is 90 km. 3) a road navigator like Tom tom is advisable . 4) Shop first and tank later.most of the supermarkets give discount after shopping on fuel. 5) dump the waste tank before departure and fill up your freshwater tank what is needed. 6) tank at regular times .especially in the south are not that many petrol stations. 7) figure out what your fuel consumption is as soon as possible.( Our Campervan consumed 1liter on 7.2 km) In mountains you will consume even more. 8) For the best rate use your Bank pass and take your $ out the wall by a bank ,make sure it is valid outside Europe. If possible,Do not change your money at Schiphol !! 9) buy a pass for top 10 campings if you decide to use these ,it gives you discount of 10 % on campings and ferry and other local attractions. 10 ) Book the ferry well in time and same counts for your hotels avoiding that they are sold. 11) We spent 30 days and drove only in the morning , that is of course up to you however I found this better than rushing trough NZ . We did not see the lower part of the South Island however a number of these area' s we will see later on our cruise with the Oosterdam. With some type of car rentals it is possible driving from the North to the South and fly back. An other option is renting a car and sleep in motels or in the apartments on the campings .
